We love this product. No installation, and it can be easily moved from room-to-room. We fill it with our own spring water for ice cubes with no unwanted taste from other foods in a refrigerator. We also find it easier to get ice from than built-in refrigerator ice makers.
A fine ice maker for the price., November 6, 2011 By Night Wolf Entertainment (Delaware -- United States)

Folks, we've had this ice maker for over two years. I'd give it 5 stars if it hadn't broken last summer. More on that later.
This item is made in China. It is sold under various appliance brand names and sports differing features and skins. It's the same product overall.
It is as advertised. Makes hard, dry ice that will last longer in your drinks. With ice retailing for $4.00 per bag these days, it will pay for itself in a year or so. If you let it run all day and bag your ice for later use, it will keep you stocked.
It's fully self-contained with a water reservoir that's filled by hand. It doesn't have to be connected to a mains water source.
My reasoning for four stars: Last summer, the plastic evaporator pan broke. I did some research and found that this is a common issue with these ice makers. Took it apart this morning and repaired the cracked pan. Test-ran it with the covers removed and observed it working.
I found what caused the broken pan. The cause isn't inferior plastic as has been presumed. A part that has given good service for over a year in this scenario isn't suddenly inferior. Something had to break it.
My observations: The servo gearmotor that shifts the pan starts moving in the wrong direction at times, even though the limit switches are already made for that direction. The pan is deadheaded (at physical movement limit) and can only move in the opposite direction. The motor tries to move the pan where it can't go and the pan cracks at the collar where the motor shaft connects.
I suspect the servo motor is going goofy. The limit switches work so that isn't the cause.
Placed a Ty-Wrap around the collar where the pan fits to the drive motor shaft and powered up again. The drive motor started in the wrong direction but the Ty-Wrap prevented the motor shaft from turning inside the pan collar and breaking it. The motor now stalls and reverses itself to complete the cycle as it should.
A hillbilly fix to be sure. But it's been running for several days and seems to be working well. How long it will work, I can't say. I'm not laying any heavy wagers on how long it will last.
>Update on the hillbilly fix, 28 Jan 12: The Ty-Wrap repair held and the icemaker continues to work well. Hope it helps.

I have only used the NewAir AI-100S ice maker for a week now but it really works well. It is a little noisy but anything with a compressor and a motor will make noise. It makes ice quickly and the ice seems to last quite a while. My only real complaint is the lid doesn't have a handle so some guests did not know how to open it. Other than that I highly recommend this ice maker.
Great little machine!, September 21, 2011 By Lisa
We camp quite regularly and buying ice can get expensive. We have had the unit for a month and it performs quite well. Once you get it set up an turn it on it really makes ice quite fast. Definitly would recommend it to everyone.
Very pleased!, August 22, 2011 By JJoyce
We bought the ice maker for our lake house, specifically to have ice for our boat. After searching for quite some time, we decided on the NewAir AI-100S silver portable ice maker. It made tons of ice in a short period of time. The fast 6-15 minute operating cycle is not 100% correct, however. It begins making ice that quickly, but when the water reservoir is filled, it took a good 1/2 hour or so to complete the cycle and use up all the water. But, a full reservoir makes enough ice to fill an 8 quart plastic freezer bag. You do need to empty the ice as it's made, into a bag and put it into the freezer. The ice maker DOES NOT KEEP THE ICE FROZEN. The only problem we encountered was a "plastic" taste and smell in the first cubes we made. As other reviewers mentioned, that may occur. I simply made a full batch of ice with the juice from a lemon added. That solved the problem, and the lemon scented ice refreshed the cooler in our boat nicely! It's a nice size, fits on the counter top, and is a convenient way to make ice.

I have used this at my camper a lot and found that if it is in an enviroment under 75 degrees it will work well. The storage tray is small so I bag the ice it makes and place in the frezzer and before the end of the day I have enough for my drink cooler for the next day. but for a big cooler would be hard to store enough ice to fill it but for me it works good.
Hard working ice maker!, July 11, 2011 By HMIDHIGH (Waverly, AL)
I searched HOURS on the internet for reviews multiple ice makers and finally narrowed my results down to the NewAir AI100S and to the Emerson portable model. My loyalty to Amazon and their great customer service is what eventually swayed my decision.
Right out of the box I found the overwhelming "plastic smell" mentioned in other reviews. The components were taped/secured for shipping with tape easy to remove that left no residue. I immediately plugged it in & filled it with water. I went ahead and made my first batch with the vinegar water to ward off any new-plastic smelling/tasting ice. Less than 10 minutes later I had ice.... albeit small and thin ice, I had ice. The longer it runs right after start up, the colder the machine gets & the ice is to it's expected size and shape - within 3-4 full cycles. I drained the vinegar water out and just did a quick rinse and restarted the process for ice to keep & use.
I did notice (as other reviewers have) that the "ice full" red light takes a while to turn off after you have dumped the collection basket. To speed up the start of another cycle, just pinch the indicator near the top of the basket with your fingers to warm it up quicker - the cycle should start back ASAP.
The "new" smell wore off after a couple of days. I now have the unit in our camper and am running it full time to keep up with "beverage coolers". It is a great addition to the camper! I understand that some customers are irritated with the ice in the storage bin that does melt slowly if not removed; but I'm pretty sure that the size of the compressor on this unit (as other portable models) is not large enough to sustain a "cold area" for ice storage. In my mind, a small price to pay for this great, small, hard working machine.
Not what I expected, but happy with the unit., July 5, 2011 By Peter V. (Denver CO)
I didnt have any taste issues but I ran several batches of ice through it before I tried the ice. Its not as fast as I'd hoped and the ice cubes are pretty small, the mechanism that moves the ice is fairly noisy. I wouldnt want to try to sleep through that noise.
But it does what you'd expect, it makes ice and you can take it with you camping and no longer have to return to civilization to purchase more ice.
